Selenium Facts
Selenium is an essential trace mineral that supports antioxidant enzymes. It supports normal immune and thyroid function. Your body uses selenium to make antioxidant enzymes, which defend cells from damage. Selenium is found in Brazil nuts, seafood, meat, and cereals, though the amount in foods depends on soil content.
Key Benefits of Selenium:
- Acts as a cofactor for antioxidant enzymes that reduce oxidative stress.
- Supports normal thyroid hormone activation.
- Supports normal immune function.
Why it Matters:
Selenium is required in very small amounts (55 µg/day for adults), but it plays an essential role in antioxidant defense and thyroid hormone regulation.
Selenium levels in foods vary widely depending on soil content — Brazil nuts from one region can contain vastly different selenium levels than those from another.
