How AG1 Is Made: Understanding NSF Certified for Sport®

You may have heard us mention that our formula is NSF Certified for Sport®. In fact, the NSF seal is proudly displayed on every single AG1 pouch. But what does NSF Certified for Sport® mean and why is third-party certification important?

In short, NSF Certified for Sport® is considered the gold standard in independent dietary supplement testing.

Why is third-party certification important?

Third-party testing is critical because it provides independent verification that a product meets the highest safety, quality, and transparency standards—rather than relying solely on a company’s own claims.

What is the NSF?

Founded in 1944, the National Sanitation Foundation (NSF) is an independent international organization that develops public health standards to ensure the safety and quality of food, water, the environment, and consumer products. NSF’s standards serve as guidelines for ingredient purity, safe manufacturing, honest labeling, and more.

NSF translates these standards into different levels with associated certifications. In order to certify a product, NSF conducts extensive audits of productions and production facilities. The final and most rigorously audited round is the NSF Certified for Sport® certification.

What is the background of NSF Certified for Sport®?

NSF created their Certified for Sport® program because of an influx of contaminated and mislabeled dietary supplements in the early 2000s. For competitive athletes who were concerned about inadvertently consuming banned substances and thus facing penalties and disqualifications, having a supplement-testing program they could trust was hugely important. NSF International introduced their Certified for Sport certification so that products could be independently tested and verified.

AG1 + NSF Certified for Sport®

NSF Certified for Sport® tests dietary supplements for over 280 banned substances, covering a wide range of stimulants, steroids, diuretics, masking agents, and other substances prohibited in sports. NSF Certified for Sport® also guarantees that products are manufactured in GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice)-compliant facilities, where every batch is tested for contaminants and banned substances.

The certification is a rigorous, ongoing process—one AG1 has upheld since 2019. These align with global anti-doping regulations, including the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).

Banned substances tested by NSF Certified for Sport® include:

Anabolic Agents
Beta-agonists
Diuretics
Hormone Antagonists
Masking Agents
Narcotics/Cannabinoids
Stimulants
Beta Blockers
Selective Androgen Receptor Modulators
Metabolic Modulators
Growth Hormone Secretagogues

Third-party testing is vital for ensuring the quality and safety of dietary supplements. This assurance is important for athletes and non-athletes alike and lots tested and certified are listed online at nsfsport.com and in the Certified for Sport® app for visibility. The certification ensures that AG1 delivers on its promises, with a standard of purity that’s Certified for Sport®—and for all the bodies we fuel.
