The brain is approximately 60% fat by dry weight, and DHA makes up a substantial portion of that, particularly in areas linked with memory and higher cognitive function ¹. Lower circulating DHA levels have been associated with cognitive decline and reduced visual acuity as people age ².
Despite its critical role, DHA intake among U.S. adults averages only ~60–80 mg/day, far below levels studied in clinical research ³. DHA is concentrated almost exclusively in marine sources, making it one of the hardest essential nutrients to obtain from a typical Western diet. Because DHA cannot be adequately synthesized from plant-based ALA, supplementation is the most practical way to support and maintain healthy levels, particularly for those with limited seafood intake.
