Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA) Facts

DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) is a long-chain omega-3 fatty acid found primarily in marine sources such as fatty fish, fish oil, and algae, and the most abundant fat in the human brain and retina. It serves as a critical structural component of neural tissue and is highly concentrated in the gray matter of the brain and the photoreceptors of the eye. DHA supports the fluidity and signaling capacity of cell membranes in the nervous system, playing a foundational role in cognitive function, vision, and neurological health across all stages of life. Like EPA, the body cannot efficiently produce DHA, making dietary or supplemental intake important.
